The Mississippi High School Activities Association ruled this week that Port Gibson’s high school football field is unplayable.

The MHSAA has moved Friday night’s Region 6-4A game to Germantown.

Port Gibson coach Lynn Lang was not too concerned about the field situation.

“With the team I’ve got, I’d play in a parking lot if I had to,” Lang said.

Robert Holloway of the MHSAA inspected the Port Gibson playing field on Monday after receiving a complaint from the coaching staff from Madison Parish. Port Gibson beat Madison Parish 28-6 last Friday at Port Gibson Stadium.

“The school from Louisiana had an issue with the field and said it was unplayable,” Holloway said. “I went down Monday and met with the assistant superintendant to look at the playing conditions. After looking at it, I felt it would not be playable this week because it is a safety hazard for the players.”

Holloway said the issue is with the field’s levelness.

“The problem is there are uneven layers between the grass and sand,” Holloway said.

Port Gibson was set to have five straight home games to open the 2012 season. But its first game with Hollandale Simmons had to be moved to Hinds AHS in Utica when a sprinkler system was left on and caused damage to the field.

Sand was brought in to fix the ruts caused by the water damage and Port Gibson played Coahoma County on Aug. 24 and Jefferson County on Aug. 31. The Blue Waves won both games. Madison Parish was the third straight game on the field.

Holloway said the school’s administration is working on fixing the field.

“They were out there cutting the grass and adding some more sand,” Holloway said. “It wouldn’t be ready for this week, but they are not set to play again there until two weeks. I’ll go back that week to see if it’s playable.”
