Some Place Special is just that

It, indeed, is some place special.
For 10 years every weekday a bus has traveled around Vicksburg picking up 50 or so people who likely would otherwise be stuck at home. They are driven to Some Place Special on Manor Drive, where they spend their days keeping up with current events, working on arts-and-crafts and learning about health and nutrition.
The program is run by Warren-Yazoo Mental Health Service. Don Brown, executive director of Warren-Yazoo, said the program is about socialization. “Most of our folks live at home alone or with family who are not able to be there all day,” Brown said.
That aspect easily could pose problems for people living with or caring for those needing extra care. In many cases, it is impossible to care for someone during weekdays because of work constraints. But this program alleviates many of those concerns.
For the past 10 years, Some Place Special has functioned in relative anonymity, as do many worthwhile endeavors. The 10-year celebration and the recognition it received last week are well-deserved.
Jessica Delk, who took over for Elizabeth Naya after nine years as program coordinator, and Warren-Yazoo Mental Health should be lauded for this noble undertaking. It’s people caring about people and stepping in to fill a need.
Some Place Special is not alone in the good work done for the community, but its work is making a difference. Those who make a difference also make a community better.
One need look no further than the bus heading to Manor Drive every weekday.
Here’s hoping the next 10 years are as successful as the past 10.
