Moving day – The very idea of it can instill fear in the hearts of all but the most organized and even-tempered people. For most of us, moving day comes too quickly, finding us not quite ready for the army of strong-armed workers to carry away our possessions. One way to make sure that your move will go as quickly and smoothly as possible is to make sure that the movers understand what you expect of them. By covering your bases ahead of moving day, you’ll help the experience be agreeable for both you and your moving team. Below are just a few things you’ll want to cover: 1. Logistics. For any move to be successful, your moving company needs to know when and where you need your belongings picked up, where they will be going and when you’ll have access to your new home. In addition, be sure to discuss which elevators they should use, if applicable, and where the moving van should park. If your new abode is on an upper floor in a building with no elevator, let the movers know so that they can bring the right equipment. Remember also that the telephone number you used when you first contacted the moving firm might be disconnected when you move. Make sure that the movers have your current cellphone number and/or your telephone number at your new home. 2. Who packs what. Some people would rather not be bothered with packing at all; they’d like the moving company to take care of it all. Others want to pack certain things themselves, such as family china, personal items and electronics. Keep in mind, however, that liability coverage may only apply if the movers pack the items, not if you pack them yourself. Make sure the company understands what’s expected on them in regards to packing. 3. Special handling. Some items require special handling, such as artwork, glassware and antiques. Though most companies are well versed in how to handle most household items, it’s wise to alert them to anything that may require extra care. In addition, make a list of any items that won’t travel on the main moving truck. 4. What you’ll be taking. In most moves, the homeowners will be driving one or more vehicles themselves to their new home. If you’ll be taking any items with you in the cars, let the movers know so they won’t be looking for these things come moving day. 5. Advise any “off limits” areas. Are you going to have your pets closed in a back bedroom away from the activity on moving day? Are you going to keep the items you’ll be transporting yourself in a closet? Make sure these areas are well-marked and that the movers are aware of them. Moving is always going to be a little stressful. After all, you’re changing homes and often cities, schools and jobs. However, making sure your moving company has all of the information it needs to make your move a success will go a long way to helping them meet – or exceed – your expectations.
