Gators try to refocus before Murrah visits

MADISON — Vicksburg coach Tavares Johnson said his team was psyched out by Madison Central last week.

At 1-7 and still winless in Region 2-6A following a 58-6 loss to Madison Central, the Gators can’t afford to be unfocused against any of their three remaining opponents.

The final three-game stretch starts Friday night when Murrah visits Memorial Stadium. That game is followed with another home game against Warren Central and a road date at Clinton.

Johnson said his team has to play better than what it showed against Madison Central.

“The guys didn’t do what they’ve been coached to do,” Johnson said. “We got psyched out by all the bells and whistles of this place. Yes, Madison has good facilities, but we can’t let that take away from what we have to do.”

Madison Central features a Jumbotron video scoreboard, one of just two in Mississippi high school football. It got a workout Friday night with plenty of highlights featuring the home team.

The Jaguars had six plays over 28 yards. On five of them, they either scored or used the long gain to score on the next play.

Madison (5-3, 4-0 Region 2-6A) ran for 235 yards, and two quarterbacks combined to throw for another 185. Backup quarterback Trey Smith accounted for five touchdowns. He had touchdown runs of 1 and 50 yards, and threw scoring passes of 1, 13 and 61 yards.

Madison Central center Bailey Pepper said the Jaguars are more versatile on offense than they’ve been in the past.

“The big change in our offense this year is we can spread you out,” Pepper said. “Tonight, we played to our strength, which was to get the ball to our speed guys.”

Vicksburg did not help its cause. It took a safety on its first offensive play, then Madison’s Bryon Gordon returned the ensuing free kick 76 yards for a touchdown to make it 9-0 just 27 seconds into the game.

One of the few highlights for Vicksburg was a 12-play, 70-yard drive capped by Johnathan Tenner’s 25-yard touchdown run that made it 23-6 midway through the second quarter.

Tenner led the Gators with 40 rushing yards, completed 2 of 3 passes for 18 yards, and caught a 20-yard pass.

“Tenner did well,” Johnson said. “But the rest of the team just did not execute our game plan. You have got to want to play.”
