Sunny skies and a crisp fall breeze greeted those attending the first installment of the 5th annual Classics in the Courtyard, sponsored by the Southern Cultural Heritage Foundation.

The popular lunchtime event drew all types Friday, from local businessmen, to mothers with babies in strollers.

“One day I will get in trouble for ordering great weather,” joked Annette Kirklin, executive director of the SCHF.

Three generations of Barbara Hickman’s family had spread out a quilt to enjoy the fun.

“It’s a family tradition for us to attend,” said Hickman’s daughter-in-law Melissa, who was holding her 6-month-old son, Josh.

Kirklin said there were even folks from New Orleans and Houston, Texas in attendance and said the crowd count was about 250.

As people made their way to an empty spot to sit and enjoy their lunch from Palmertree’s Catering and listen to Patrick Smith and Company, Kirklin announced the SCHF had received a $10,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.

She said the grant will be used to fund Spectrum, a free month long summer arts camp, offered to 60 children ages 10-16.

Spectrum focuses on one artist component each week and Kirklin said the program is set to begin in June 2013.

This will be the second year the SCHF has received the grant. The first year was in 2011. Classics in the Courtyard continues the next three Fridays.
