Construction of a Chick-fil-A restaurant on Halls Ferry Road should begin by the end of November and open in the spring or summer, a company spokeswoman said Monday.

“We should start next month,” said Brenda Morrow, a senior management consultant with the Atlanta-based chain, who pointed to an April-to-June time frame to serve its first customers. “We’re targeting the second quarter next year to open.”

Its site, an undeveloped area bordered by Walgreens, Halls Ferry Station strip mall and Regions Bank, and its building plan have been approved, city building and inspections director Victor Gray-Lewis said. Access to the store will be between it and Walgreens, according to drawings of the eatery proposed in February.

It will be the 28th in Mississippi. Locations nearest Vicksburg are in Clinton, Flowood and Monroe. Nationwide, the privately held company operates more than 1,600 stores in 39 states, including about 1,000 stand-alone stores, according to its website.

The quick-service chicken sandwich chain’s arrival would be the latest piece of retail development near Halls Ferry and South Frontage roads, one of the city’s busiest intersections. Mississippi Medicaid, Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt and Yanni’s Greek Gyro have opened in the strip mall. Work has begun on Pemberton Square Boulevard on a Dollar General store, to be Vicksburg’s fourth. It is expected to open at the end of January, builder Michael Rozier said.
