Work to raise 4.7 miles of mainline Mississippi River levee in Issaquena County begins this week and should take a year, according to a release Wednesday from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Vicksburg District.
Raising the section of levee southwest of Onward requires asphalt to be removed from Mississippi 465 where part of the levee crests, the release said. Detour signs are placed near the Goose Lake Road ramp to route traffic around the area. Access to property for local residents should not be affected by the detour, the release said.
The reconstruction is north of Lake Albemarle, near where 1,500 feet of earth was reinforced in the months following the Mississippi River Flood of 2011.
