Services for Clyde Harris Sr. will be at noon Saturday at Greater Grove Street M.B. Church with the Rev. Robert L. Miller officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon until 4:30 p.m. Friday at Lakeview Memorial Funeral Home, from 6 until 7 p.m. Friday at Holly Grove M.B. Church and Saturday at Greater Grove Street M.B. from 11 a.m. until the service.

Mr. Harris died Sunday, Oct. 28, 2012, at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. He was 75.

He was born Feb. 20, 1937, in Vicksburg. He attended McIntyre School and graduated in 1959 from Rosa A. Temple High School. He was a member of Holly Grove M.B. Church, where he was a trustee and deacon.

He was a former employee of Noble’s Cleaners and served in the Army from 1959 until 1963. He joined the 386th Reserve Unit and retired from the 412th after 25 years of service. He was a life member of American Legion Tyner-Ford Post 213.

Mr. Harris joined the Vicksburg Police Department on Aug. 1, 1968, as one of the first group of officers, known as The Lucky Seven, to break racial barriers at the department. He retired as a captain from the department after 31 years of service. He also was a former member of the Civil Service Commission.

He is survived by his wife, Mattie Gleese Harris; five daughters, Stacy Talley, LaKisha Harris and Rochelle Jackson, all of Vicksburg, Shynah Jackson of Indiana and Thelma Vann of Colorado; six sons, Clyde Harris and Craig Buchanan, both of Vicksburg, Carl Harris and Robert Harris, both of Texas, Gary Harris of California and Clarence Ray Cooper of Detroit; a sister, Josephine Harris Sanders of Vicksburg; 31 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends, including Lula Cross, Sheryl Walker, Linda Younger, Olivia James, Earlean Wesley, Elva Tolliver and the Preacely, Donerson and Burns families.
