Sam Stanton and St. Aloysius served notice in the home opener Tuesday. It’s a new day on the pitch on Grove Street.
Stanton scored twice off assists by Blake Hudson to pace St. Al to a 3-1 win over Brookhaven.
“They did great. They gave it their all. That’s all we can ask for,” first-year St. Al coach Scott Mathis said. “Everybody played very well and I’m very proud of them. We’re trying to get them into the mentality of winning.”
The Flashes came out with intensity and were rewarded in the eighth minute, as Hudson found Stanton in the middle of the field and Stanton booted it past the right post.
In the 33rd minute, Stanton struck again, putting just enough leg behind it to loft it beneath the crossbar and over Brookhaven keeper Andrew Culver’s head.
Hudson wrapped up the scoring for the Flashes (1-2), as he took a nicely placed corner kick by Steven Cialone and found the back of the net with ease in the 56th minute.
“We’re progressing very fast. We’ve got a lot of young players, but they’re stepping up to what we expect,” Hudson said. “This gives us momentum to keep pushing and keep winning.”
Taylor Peets scored for Brookhaven on an assist by Scotty Tate.
