The two men in the horse-drawn covered wagon hospitalized Saturday afternoon following a wreck on U.S. 61 South were on a mission to raise money for breast cancer research

Eugene Smith, 52, and Charles France Jr., 56, both of Miami, Okla., planned to travel from Oklahoma, across Missouri and Arkansas into Memphis, then down U.S. 61 to New Orleans before returning home through Louisiana and Texas in four months while raising money for Helping Friends Mammogram Fund, which helps the uninsured get mammograms.

Smith previously said he hoped to pick up a large number of small donations in the trip of more than 1,600 miles.

“I’d like to challenge every person in Vicksburg to donate one dollar to the Freeman Foundation,” Smith said Friday while the team rested at the Elks Lodge on U.S. 61 South.

Following the wreck, in which a car drove into the back of the rig, Smith was airlifted to University Medical Center, where he was in good condition Saturday night. France was still being treated at River Region Medical Center Saturday night.

Donations to the men’s cause can be mailed to Helping Friends Mammogram Fund, 11151 S. 540 Road, Miami, Okla. 74354.
