Before packing her bags for Las Vegas, Miss Mississippi 2012 Marie Wicks modeled some of her wardrobe she will be taking to the Miss America Pageant during the Miss Mississippi Trunk Show.

About 150 attended the Sunday afternoon show at the Vicksburg Convention Center, said Winky Freeman, who serves as the executive director of the Miss Mississippi’s Outstanding Teen Pageant and is also on the board of trustees for the Miss Mississippi Pageant.

Wicks, a graduate of the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College and the Croft Institute at the University of Mississippi, said she had a lot of help pulling her wardrobe together.

She said the clothes and accessories she will be wearing for the pageant, which is scheduled for Jan. 12, reflects her style.

“I am a huge fan of the Turner Classic Movies and I love the style of Grace Kelly,” the 23-year-old Ocean Springs native said. “Vintage, classy and understated.”

Wicks, who stands 5-feet, 7½-inches tall, said she is more at home in her everyday casual wear and ballet flats, but said when she puts on her Jonathan Kayne 4-inch heels, she feels “elevated.”

Wicks said that during the trunk show, she was not allowed to model the evening gown or swim suit that she will be wearing during the Miss America Pageant, but she did model the swimsuit she wore during the Miss Mississippi Pageant.

“It’s my personal favorite,” Wicks said of the black one-shouldered one-piece suit.

Wicks said the Miss America Pageant will also offer contestants the option of wearing a one-piece or a two-piece swimsuit for the lifestyle and fitness portion of the competition.

This year, Catalina, the original sponsor for the Miss America Pageant swimsuit in the 1940s, is again the swimwear sponsor for the 2013 pageant.

Wicks said she will be spending 10 days in Vegas and said after receiving an overview of the scheduled events for the Miss America Pageant, her wardrobe will be extensive.

“I haven’t decided if I am going to ship my clothes or bring them on the plane,” she said.

Sunday’s trunk show was free but spectators were encouraged to bring a teddy bear for the Blair E. Batson Children’s Hospital and old eye glasses to support Wicks’ platform, eyeS.T.A.R. — Eyesight to All Regions.

Along with promoting her platform to service organizations, business and civic leaders and the media, Wicks has also written and illustrated “MYOPE: The Tale Of A Lion And A Pair Of Glasses,” which she is selling for $10. All the proceeds go to the Children’s Miracle Network hospitals, which partners with the Miss America Organization.

In 1989, the Miss America Organization founded the platform concept, which requires each contestant to choose an issue in which she cares deeply and is relevant to society.

The 2013 Miss America competition will be aired on ABC at 8 p.m. Jan. 12 from Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas.
