Jack Oneal Hearn Sr., 91, died Monday, Dec. 3, 2012, at his home in Vicksburg.

Mr. Hearn was a veteran of the Army, serving in World War II where he stormed the beaches of Normandy. He earned numerous medals, including the Purple Heart, Good Conduct, French Legion Medal of Honor and Unit Citation.

Mr. Hearn was truly an American hero. He loved his family and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was also an avid gardener.

Mr. Hearn was a member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, Hill City Chapter No. 680. He was loved by all who knew him.

He worked for Anderson-Tully as a saw filer, retiring in 1986 after 40 years of service.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lena Ross Hearn; his father, Charles J. Hearn; his mother, Willie Mozino Hearn; a son, Jack Oneal Hearn Jr.; and five brothers and five sisters.

Survivors include daughters, Gail Lamb Steed (Ricky) and Glenda Ervin, both of Vicksburg, and Carolyn Tyler of Oxford; daughter-in-law, Denise Hearn of Vicksburg; five grandchildren, Tracy Norris (Troy) and Mark Green (Tommy Ann), both of Vicksburg, Brenda Smith (Sean) of Bakersville, Calif., Linda Bills (Eric) of Pocotona, Idaho, and Pam Green Antoine (Tommy) of Orange Beach, Ala.; four great-grandchildren; and his companion, Patsy Robinson of Vicksburg.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, 2012, at Frank J. Fisher Funeral Home in Vicksburg with the Rev. Dwight Sibley officiating. Burial will be at Cedar Hill Cemetery with military honors. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 5 until 7 tonight and from 1 p.m. Thursday until the service.

Pallbearers will be Troy Norris, Tommy Antoine, Eric Bills, Lonnie Gentry, Neal Hearn, Charles Cockrell, Charles O. Hearn and Ricky Steed.

Honorary pallbearers will be James “Squeaky” Hearn, Pete Hearn, Calvin Hearn, Dr. Daniel Edney, members of the M.O.P.H. and friends of Levi’s.
