Visitors to Vicksburg National Military Park next month will have a chance to take a candlelit look at the past.
Beginning at 7 p.m. April 12, VNMP will hold its Shadows of the Past candlelight walking tour along part of the park’s tour road. The tour covers about a mile long stretch of tour road around the former visitor center on Pemberton Avenue near the site of Confederate Lt. Gen. John C. Pemterton’s surrender to Union Maj. Gen. Ulyses S. Grant on July 4, 1863.
The event is free, but reservations are required. Each tour is limited to 30 visitors. The hour-long tours will begin at 7 p.m. and depart each 30 minutes until 9 p.m.
Participants in the walk are encouraged to wear comfortable walking shoes, bring a flash light and dress appropriately for the weather.
For reservations and directions, call the park at 601-636-0583.
Two previous Shadows of the Past tours have focused on Vicksburg National Cemetery, and in December 2012, the park offered a candlelight tour of the U.S.S. Cairo, which sunk in the Yazoo River about seven miles north of Vicksburg on Dec. 12, 1862.
The first Shadows of the Past tour in October 2011 included stops at Shirley House, Battery DeGolyer and the Illinois Memorial.
