The storm that tore a path of destruction south and east of Vicksburg earlier this week was officially labeled a tornado Thursday.

The EF-1 tornado was confirmed Thursday by the National Weather Service, Warren County Emergency Manager John Elfer said.

It was unclear if Warren County would receive disaster relief funds though Mississippi Emergency Management Agency, he said.

“We’ve reported everything, and its just wait and see now,” Elfer said.

The storm started at Glass Road and U.S. 61 South before cutting a path 4.75 miles long and 200 yards wide across the county.

An EF-1 tornado produces winds of up to 105 miles per hour.

At least 16 homes were damaged, and there was one unconfirmed injury during the storm, Elfer said. Two storm-related injuries were reported Wednesday when a portion of a tree fell on Michael Carpenter, 44, who lives on Old Highway 27, and William McClellan, 22, who lives on Paxton Road. The two men were preparing to clear storm debris in the 400 block of Evans Street when the tree fell and struck both of them, Sheriff Martin Pace said.

Carpenter was taken by ambulance to University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, and McClellan was taken in a private vehicle to River Region Medical Center, Pace said. Neither hospital had records of the men.

The twister is one of 14 confirmed across the state, according to the National Weather Service.

The strongest tornado in the state — an EF-4— was reported in Louisville. The storm produced winds of up to 200 miles per hour.

Civil Air Patrol Units from North Mississippi were surveying damage in the Tupelo Area this week, and the local squadron has been preparing for any possible action.

“We have not been tasked by MEMA at this time, but we’re on alert,” said Capt. Shaun J. Kelly of the Vicksburg Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol.
