A Vicksburg man accused of shooting a woman in the leg during a fight in Marcus Bottom was held without bail this morning.
Sammy Stewart, 23, whose last known address is 1900 Baldwin Ferry Road, surrendered at about 1p.m. Wednesday at Vicksburg police headquarters and was charged with aggravated assault, police Capt. Sandra Williams said.
Stewart is accused of shooting 23-year-old Franchesia Miles in the thigh at about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday near the intersection of Halls Ferry Road and Bowmar Avenue.
Miles was taken to University of Mississippi Medical Center. She had been discharged from UMMC this morning, hospital spokesman Gary Pettus said.
Police have said the shooting was the result of a large fight that broke out on the corner. Someone involved in the fight fired a flare gun, which police believe caused the opposing side to return fire and one of the bullets struck Miles, Williams has said.
Investigators have not determined a motive for the shooting.
Stewart was last arrested in October in an undercover drug sting that caught 15 accused drug dealers. He was indicted in January for two counts of sale of a controlled substance and was out of jail on bail at the time of the shooting.
Stewart was held in the Issaquena County Correctional Facility this morning without bail and is expected to appear in Municipal Court on Friday. It is unlikely that he will be able to post bail because of the prior indictment.
