The case against a Warren County man accused of being intoxicated and causing a deadly crash on Washington Street tops cases to be presented to the Warren County grand jury when they convene today.
Dakota West, 22, 1270 Jeff Davis Road, has been charged with aggravated driving under the influence in a May 23 crash at Washington and Bowman streets that killed 26-year-old Krystal Foster.
The case against West is expected to be one of about 75 presented this week to the grand jury, District Attorney Ricky Smith said.
West was behind the wheel of a Lincoln LS when it collided with a Ford Aerostar van near Washington and Bowman streets. Foster was a passenger in the van. The driver of the van was not injured.
West posted $85,000 and was released from the Warren County Jail.
The approximately 75 cases expected to be presented this week represent a light caseload for the grand jury.
“It appears we have less cases to present than any time in the past several years,” Smith said.
Typically, grand jurors review more than 100 cases.
The panel of 18 grand jurors was chosen this morning from a pool of about 250 registered voters and sworn in by presiding Judge M. James Chaney. They will review criminal cases and issue indictments if there is enough evidence to go to trial. If indicted, defendants will be arraigned, or formally advised of the charges against them and given a trial date, beginning Friday in circuit court.
In addition to reviewing evidence in criminal cases, jurors will tour the Warren County Jail, Youth Court and Children’s Shelter and meet with Judge Johnny Price and other county officials. They will also prepare a report of recommendations for the Board of Supervisors.
