A Warren County woman accused of stabbing a man to death the week before Thanksgiving will stand trial in March.
Latoya Nicole Brisco, 27, 4941 Mississippi 27, stood before Circuit Judge M. James Chaney on Thursday afternoon with her attorney John Bullard after indictment by a Warren County grand jury for murder.
Bullard entered a not guilty plea on her behalf, and Chaney set trial for March 2.
If convicted, she faces life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Sheriff’s deputies arrested Brisco at about 10 p.m. Tuesday at a relative’s home on Mississippi 27.
“This is a secret indictment that she has just been served with,” Bullard said while asking that bail be set for his client.
Following a secret indictment, an arraignment in circuit court fulfills the role of an initial court appearance that typically occurs in municipal or justice court.
Chaney set bail at $100,000.
Bullard had asked for a $50,000 bail, and prosecutors made no recommendation.
Brisco is accused of stabbing 50-year-old Carl Whitaker to death Nov. 18 at a home in the China Grove community.
When deputies and paramedics arrived at the home at 114 Freedom Lane, they found Whitaker on the floor suffering from multiple stab wounds. He was not breathing and had no pulse when investigators arrived, Sheriff Martin Pace has said.
Before the stabbing several people including Brisco and Whitaker had been drinking and playing cards at the residence, Pace said.
Initially, no one was charged in the killing but after the investigation was complete the results were turned over to the District Attorney’s Office who presented them to the grand jury.
Brisco was held in the Warren County Jail this morning.
The stabbing was the second time in two years that Whitaker had been attacked.
In September 2012, he was hospitalized after being robbed and hit in the back of the head with a beer bottle while walking on Bowmar Avenue, Vicksburg police have said.
Whitaker’s wallet, which held no cash, was stolen in the robbery.
