A Vicksburg man will spend two decades in prison for breaking into a home, falling asleep on a couch and then attacking with a crowbar the 67-year-old man who woke him.
Circuit Judge M. James Chaney last week sentenced Sherman Lee Williams, 57, 1310 Bowmar Ave., to 20 years in prison for burglary of a dwelling and aggravated assault.
Following his release from prison, Williams will be on probation for 10 years.
Williams, who was represented by Stephen McMillin, must also pay a $2,000 fine and $584.50 in court costs.
On July 7, 2013, Williams broke into a home in the 900 block of Avenue E and fell asleep on the couch. Shortly before 5 a.m., the 67-year-old homeowner awoke to find Williams on his couch.
The homeowner woke Williams, who began hitting him in the head and body with a crowbar, according to Vicksburg police records.
The victim was taken to River Region Medical center where he received staples and stitches for the injuries to his head before being released.
At the hospital, the victim told police that Williams was an acquaintance of his girlfriend, but he did not know why Williams was in his home.
Williams told police that he had stayed on the porch of a friend’s home on Bowmar Avenue that night and listed three witnesses who could provide an alibi for him. All three witnesses said the last time they saw Williams he was leaving a club at 1308 Bowmar Ave., at about 3 a.m. July 7.
