Benton Academy hammers Eagles

To say it was ugly would be an understatement.
Porters Chapel Academy gave up more than 400 yards, had two players ejected and threw two interceptions, including one for a touchdown, as it fell 41-0 to Benton Academy on Friday night.
“I’m just disappointed in our fight. We came out flat and played flat all night. I’m disappointed in our effort,” PCA coach Wayne Lynch said.
Benton (4-2) gained 418 yards of total offense, including 352 rushing yards, while PCA (1-7) gained only 45 total yards. Leading the way for Benton was Strom Davis with 187 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns. Junior running back Wyatt Street rushed for 109 yards and threw for 66, including two touchdowns out of the wildcat formation.
Benton’s other score came on a 50-yard interception return from defensive back John Michael Graham. Graham also had Benton’s other interception of the night.
PCA’s leading rusher Hunter Lyons had 9 yards. Starting quarterback Zac Morgan was 2-for-9 passing for 29 yards and two interceptions. Eric Jackson caught both passes from Morgan.
“We had opportunities to do some things but we got down, and we stopped playing,” Lynch said.
Benton’s running game took advantage of Michael Croisdale’s absence at defensive tackle after he was kicked out midway though the second quarter for kicking a Benton player.
“We don’t have a lot of big bodies. With him out, it hurt us,” Lynch said.
Glen Alan Kittrell was also ejected with about 4 minutes left in the third quarter after he and Benton’s Barrett Whitworth took swings at each other. Withworth was also booted from the field.
“We let our emotions take over in the wrong way,” Lynch said. “We have to control our emotions better than that.”
PCA sophomore Patrick Minor came in at quarterback in the second half as the team was looking for new life.
“We were trying to get a spark and see if we could get something going out there,” Lynch said.
The spark Lynch was trying to ignite barely had a chance to kindle. Porters Chapel ran 11 plays in the second half, totaling an average of just a yard per play.
PCA, which likely had its playoff hopes extinguised with the loss, has the week off before traveling to Pearl on Oct. 24 to take on Park Place Christian Academy in the season finale.
