A Warren County woman shot while breaking into an 82-year-old man’s home on Wisconsin Avenue was hospitalized this morning and her boyfriend who assisted in the home invasion was in jail, police said today.

Betty Robertson, 42, 523 Hall Road, was shot in the leg by the 82-year-old after she and her boyfriend Carl Marshall, 55, 1846 Natchez Ave., broke into the man’s home in the 3100 block of Wisconsin Avenue, Vicksburg police Capt. Sandra Williams said.

Robertson was taken to University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson where she was in critical but stable condition this morning, Williams said.

Upon her release from the hospital, Robertson will be charged with home invasion, Williams said.

Marshall was arrested and charged with home invasion at about 9:50 a.m. Wednesday in the 3100 block of Indiana Avenue after he called 911 to report Robertson had been shot, Williams said.

About 10 minutes after Marshall’s call, the 82-year-old called 911 to report the home invasion.

The man told police that he was lying in bed when her heard Robertson knocking on his door and demanding to enter. Robertson forced open the door and headed toward the man’s bedroom, Williams said.

The 82-year-old told police that he fired two shots with a .38-caliber revolver toward the door, and one of the bullets hit Robertson. After the shooting the pair fled the home, Williams said.

Robertson has come to the home in the past under the pretext of providing the homeowner meals, Williams said. The homeowner told police that the woman never had a meal for him and once inside she began to ask for money and water.

Marshall was held without bail this morning awaiting his initial appearance in Vicksburg Municipal Court.

The home invasion is the second reported this week in Vicksburg. It is not believed to be related to a break-in reported Monday that also led to a shootout.

In that home invasion, a witness described a 6-foot black man wearing dark pants and a gray sweatshirt entered a home in the 100 block of Roseland Drive before 5:40 a.m. Monday and forced a mother and one of her children out of bed at gunpoint, police have said.

The man tied up the mother and child in the living room, but the child was able to escape and get a gun while the burglar stepped outside, police have said.
