St. Al places second at state swim meet

St. Aloysius didn’t bring home any gold medals Saturday, but still had a pretty productive day at the MHSAA Class I boys state swim meet.
Dixon Stone finished third in both the 50 and 100 yard freestyle, and was part of the 200 yard medley relay team that placed second as the Flashes finished second in the team standings.
St. Al had seven individual swimmers and three relay teams reach the finals in their events, and totaled 75 points as a team. It was just enough to beat third-place Madison-St. Joe, which had 70 points, but still well behind state champion St. Andrew’s.
St. Andrew’s finished with 128 points to win its second Class I title in three years. Class I consists of teams in Classes 1A through 4
A in all other sports.
St. Al’s performance was buoyed by a strong showing in the 100 yard breaststroke.
Three swimmers — Charlie Martin, Tommy Martin and Andrew Ulmer — reached the eight-man finals. Charlie Martin finished second, Tommy Martin was fourth, and Ulmer eighth to give the Flashes 13 points from the event.
Stone added 12 more with his two third-place finishes.
Charlie Martin also placed fourth in the 200 yard individual medley, and Gabriel Riveros was fifth in the 100 yard butterfly.
The 200 medley relay team of of Stone, Riveros, Charlie Martin and Connor Clark came in second. Riveros, Tommy Martin, Charlie Martin and Stone finished fourth in the 200 freestyle relay. Clark, Riveros, Tommy Martin and Ulmer were also fourth in the 400 freestyle relay.
In the Class I girls meet, St. Al finished sixth in the team standings with 34 points. St. Andrew’s won the state title with 116 points.
St. Al’s Adrienne Eckstein finished third in the 100 yard backstroke, and Katie Martin was fifth in the 100 butterfly.
The team of Eckstein, Martin, Victoria Gong and Katelyn Brock finished third in the 400 freestyle relay, and fourth in the 200 freestyle and 200 medley relays.
In the Class II girls meet, Warren Central’s Carley Copelin reached the finals and finished sixth in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 26.77 seconds.
WC’s 200 yard freestyle relay team of Copelin, Blaine Butler, Mya Chappell and Abi Wallace finished eighth.
