Karry Callahan didn’t waste any time this season in making a big splash.
The junior forward had the first triple-double of her high school career — 12 points, 24 rebounds and 10 assists — in just the second game of the season as the Missy Gators blasted Wingfield 78-23 on Tuesday night.
The assist and rebound totals were both career highs for Callahan, the reigning Vicksburg Post Girls Basketball Player of the Year. She also had three steals and one blocked shot.
Led by Callahan, the Missy Gators (2-0) shot 47 percent as a team and jumped out to a 23-point lead at halftime. Wingield didn’t score more than seven points in any quarter, and was shut out in the fourth.
Ruddie Shears scored a game-high 24 points for Vicksburg. Keiyana Gaskin had 22 points, seven steals, five rebounds and five assists.
The Missy Gators also got some solid contributions from the bench. Jasmine Stevenson had six points and three assists, while Glenisha Fortenberry grabbed seven rebounds and Jayda Thigpen had five rebounds and two steals. All three are sophomores.
“Our sophomores did a good job under pressure. The best is yet to come with this group. They work well as a team,” VHS assistant coach Deborah Brown said.
(G) Terry 54, WC 50
T’onna Sims scored a team-high 16 points, but Warren Central (1-1) couldn’t get past Terry.
Shae Bracey added 14 points and Ama Arkoful scored 10 for the Lady Vikes.
Terry hit several 3-pointers in the third quarter to get the lead, and was up by as many as eight in the fourth quarter before WC scored two quick baskets in the last 20 seconds to get within four.
(B) Vicksburg 57, Wingfield 53
Tyler Smith had 15 points as Vicksburg (2-0) fended off Wingifeld (0-1) with some sharp free throw shooting and late-game perserverance.
Kirk Parker added 11 points for the Gators, Antonio Moore scored 10 and Justin Selvy had eight.
Vicksburg went 23-for-32 from the foul line to help finish off the win. Smith was 8-for-8 from the line. Eight players hit at least one free throw for the Gators.
(B) Terry 62, WC 52
Jimmy Burse scored 16 points, Ke’Jerrick Taylor added 12, and Terry used a big second quarter to beat Warren Central.
Terry scored 25 points in the second quarter to open a 12-point lead at halftime, then kept the Vikings at arm’s length in the second half.
