Teller wears many hats for Flashes

For the second time in two years Friday, Brandon Teller snapped the banner and ran onto Balzli Field with the Class 1A North State Championship on the line. He also lined up as a starting wide receiver for the game for the second year in a row.
Not bad for someone who has only been playing varsity football for that long.
Because of that, it’s no surprise why one of the most versatile and athletic players on the roster feels a little spoiled.
“I feel a little spoiled actually, getting to go all the way this far in the only two seasons I’ve been playing,” Teller said. “Hopefully we can carry that into next year and do the same next year.”
For now, the sophomore is focusing firmly on this season as he and his team look to win the school’s first state championship by beating Cathedral Friday morning at Mississippi State’s Davis Wade Stadium.
Teller has become the bedrock of St. Al’s receiving corps, hauling in 22 passes for a team-leading 372 yards and five touchdowns this season.
He’s already the school’s career leader in receptions and only needs 179 yards and two touchdowns to own the records in those categories as well.
Teller also moonlights as the backup quarterback, completing 3 of 4 passes for 42 yards under center this season in mostly mop-up duty. He’s also averaging 10.6 yards per carry in his two varsity seasons, and has 39 tackles and two interceptions this year as a defensive back.
“He plays a lot of positions for us,” St. Al coach BJ Smithhart said. “He’s one of our most versatile guys. He’s gotten snaps in the slot, he’s gotten snaps at flanker, he’s gotten snaps at quarterback. He’s our backup quarterback. He kind of does it all.”
The adaptable Teller has been able to do whatever is asked of him this season while the Flashes compete for a Class 1A championship. If he needs to play offense or defense, Smithhart knows he’ll be able to answer the call.
“He’s just kind of built like that I guess,” Smithhart said. “He’s tall and fast and athletic, and has a little mean streak to boot. He can do a lot of things.”
Teller wasn’t asked to play defense last year, but this season he has started on offense, defense and special teams as he matures into the system. And if his first two years are any indication, the sophomore will be enjoying success long after Friday’s game is complete.
“That’s his personality,” Smithhart said. “He’s a competitor and also, whatever you ask him to do, he just jumps in there and does it.”
