Warren Central, Vicksburg and St. Aloysius will see both a lot of familiar faces and plenty of new ones in region play next year under the Mississippi High School Activities Association’s reclassification plan for the 2015-17 school years.
Warren Central will remain a part of Region 2-6A in football along with Starkville, Clinton, Madison Central, Northwest Rankin and Murrah. The only change comes with the addition of Callaway, which replaces Columbus. The Falcons have been moved to Region 1-6A.
Perhaps the biggest gridiron shakeup came in Vicksburg’s Region 2-5A, where two new teams have been placed.
Grenada and Holmes Central will join Lanier, Neshoba Central, Ridgeland, Canton and Germantown. Former members Pearl and Callaway both been were moved up to Class 6A.
St. Aloysius will stay in the north as a part of Region 2-1A, but the region did get smaller with the departure of two schools.
Montgomery County and Durant will no longer be on St. Al’s schedule, with both teams heading to Region 3-1A. Simmons has been bumped down from Class 2A to the Flashes’ region, which is now at seven teams. The other three Class 1A regions all have nine teams apiece.
In basketball, Callaway has jumped from Vicksburg’s division to Warren Central’s. The Chargers, who beat Vicksburg five times last season -— including for the Class 5A championship — will leave Vicksburg and join Warren Central in Division 4-6A. Clinton and Greenville will remain in the division.
Once again, Vicksburg will experience the most change in Warren County after being reshuffled to Region 6-5A with three brand new teams. The Gators will head south and join Wingfield, Natchez and Brookhaven in their home for basketball and baseball.
St. Aloysius will remain in Region 7-1A for hoops with Bogue Chitto, Cathedral, Dexter and Mississippi School for the Deaf. Pelahatchie and Piney Woods have been dropped from the region, with Salem and Dexter taking their places.
