When he was held scoreless in a five-point loss to Cathedral on Friday night, Luke Eckstein vowed to do more on the offensive end to help his team.
On Saturday, the West Point-bound senior was true to his word.
Eckstein scored 12 of St. Aloysius’ first 14 points by drilling four 3-pointers, and finished with 21 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots to lead the Flashes to an 81-65 win over Greenville-St. Joseph in the consolation game of the Catholic Schools Tournament.
“It was weighing pretty deep on me. (Friday) night I didn’t play bad, but I didn’t score at all. So I knew I needed to do something to step up for the team, so I was thinking about that,” Eckstein said.
Eckstein’s 3-pointers were part of an early barrage by the Flashes that put the game out of reach early. Connor Smith hit two treys in the first quarter as St. Al stormed out to a 29-12 lead. Greenville-St. Joe never got the margin back to single digits.
In all, St. Al hit nine 3-pointers in the first half and 10 in the game.
“It comes and goes,” Eckstein said of his 3-point shooting. “Usually I drive more and get fouled and that’s how I get my points, but sometimes I’m on and today was one of those days when I was just on. It felt pretty good. Coming out of my hand the ball felt real nice. I got good touches, teammates passing. It was just a good overall effort.”
Smith led St. Al with 23 points, Mike Bell scored 11, and Rett Verhine finished with 18 points and six rebounds.
Kolby Johnson led Greenville-St. Joe with 22 points. Jo Quez Sanders added 19 and Adrian Azar had 15.
St. Al (1-4) won for the first time this season, although its first three games were essentially preseason contests. Nearly a dozen players who were playing with the football team didn’t join the basketball team until this week. The Flashes only had five players for those first three games, with Eckstein the only regular starter.
“Now that we have everyone back, we have a pretty deep team. We’re all getting used to each other. I feel like today was a really good starting point for us,” Eckstein said. “We can get even better than we were today.”

Grace Upshaw scored a team-high 14 points, Alyssa Engel added seven points and three steals, and St. Aloysius overcame a depleted lineup to beat Greenville-St. Joe in the girls’ consolation game of the Catholic Schools Tournament.
St. Al was playing without four starters — including leading scorers Michelle Howington and Avery Parman — who skipped the game to take the ACT.
The backups held St. Joe scoreless in the first quarter, opened up a 17-point lead by halftime, and were never threatened in the second half. Their effort allowed St. Al (3-4) to snap a four-game losing streak.
“The group that we had played hard and we came out with a win,” St. Al coach Delvin Thompson said. “They played good. They did what I asked them to do, so I have no complaints.”
