St. Andrew’s smashes Lady Flashes

Two weeks of bad weather and the Christmas holiday kept the St. Aloysius Lady Flashes from being at the top of their game Monday.
St. Andrew’s kept them from getting into the win column.
Phoebe Xu scored three goals and assisted on another as St. Andrew’s routed St. Al 6-0 at Balzli Field.
It was a disheartening beginning to 2015, and to the Division 5-1A/2A/3A schedule. The loss means the Lady Flashes (5-3-1, 0-1) will have to overcome a six-goal differential in the rematch Jan. 16 in Ridgeland to pass the Lady Saints (7-7-1, 1-1) in the division standings.
St. Al also needs to beat Madison-St. Joseph twice. St. Al and St. Joe play Thursday in Madison and Jan. 19 in Vicksburg.
“We need to try to win the next game. If we don’t we’ll have to try to win the next two. We won’t have a choice. And if we don’t, it’s over,” St. Al coach Don Rowland said.
Monday’s game started rocky and got worse as it progressed for St. Al.
Xu broke a scoreless tie in the 14th minute, then St. Andrew’s padded its lead with an own goal in the 28th.
Xu scored in the 33rd minute and again in the 42nd to put the Lady Saints ahead 4-0 and turn it into a full-fledged rout.
Veronica Guastella and Charlotte Dunbar added goals in the second half to finish the scoring.
St. Andrew’s outshot the Lady Flashes 19-3 in the game.
“We had two practices over the last 2 1/2 weeks because of the weather. We did some indoor, and that’s it,” Rowland said, adding that St. Andrew’s was simply better right now. “That’s a skilled team compared to us. That’s all it is.”

Anthony Bynoe scored two of St. Andrew’s four first-half goals as the Saints routed St. Al (3-5, 0-1 Division 5-1A/2A/3A).
Jack Hawkins and John Ross Mitchell also scored in the first half, and Graham Grogan scored in the second half.
Despite the lopsided loss, St. Al coach Scott Mathis was optimistic the Flashes could rebound Thursday and get back on the path to a playoff berth.
“We’re showing a lot of potential. You can see it out there. It’s just a matter of executing the ball and keeping it in our control, and it’s getting there,” Mathis said. “We’ve got a shot at beating St. Joe, I think.”
