Sean Brewer went from being one of the best players on a championship team at Warren Central to one of the best ever to play for Millsaps College.
Now, he’s one of the best to ever play college football, period.
Brewer, a Vicksburg native who helped Warren Central win the 1988 Class 5A championship before becoming a three-time Division III All-America defensive lineman at Millsaps, was elected Friday to the College Football Hall of Fame.
He’s the third player from Warren County to receive the honor, following Georgia Tech’s George Morris (1981) and Jackson State’s Kevin Dent (2006). Brewer will be inducted into the Hall as part of the Class of 2015 at a ceremony in Atlanta on Dec. 8.
Brewer is the first player from Millsaps ever elected to the College Hall of Fame. He’s also the only defensive lineman in Division III history to be selected as an All-American three times. Only five players have that distinction at any position.
“Brewer was a great player, unstoppable,” longtime Millsaps baseball coach Jim Page said in a school release. Page was a defensive assistant during Brewer’s career. “I mainly coached the secondary and we had one of the better units in the nation. We were good, but we knew our success had a lot to do with the havoc that Sean wreaked on every play.”
Brewer was a two-time Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year from 1989-92, and a first-team all-conference selection all four years he played at Millsaps.
He remains Millsaps’ all-time leader in solo tackles (332) and quarterback sacks (52), and set the school’s single-season sacks record with 15 in 1992. The award for the top defensive lineman in Division III is named after Brewer.
After his playing career, Brewer continued to excel as he went into coaching, teaching and education administration. In 2010 he was named the NASSP/Virco Assistant Principal of the Year for Mississippi while working at Ridgeland High School. He is currently the principal at Rosa Scott High School in Madison.
Brewer was selected from a ballot that included nearly 200 players and coaches from all levels of college football.
Also selected to the Hall’s Class of 2015 on Friday were Nebraska linebacker Trev Alberts; Oklahoma linebacker Brian Bosworth, Arizona State linebacker Bob Breunig; Pittsburgh offensive tackle Ruben Brown; Florida receiver Wes Chandler; Notre Dame receiver Thom Gatewood; Yale running back Dick Jauron; Washington offensive tackle Lincoln Kennedy; Michigan running back Rob Lytle; Marshall quarterback Michael Payton; Kentucky defensive end Art Still; Texas Tech linebacker Zach Thomas; Texas running back Ricky Williams; and coaches Bill Snyder (Kansas State) and Jim Tressel (Youngstown State and Ohio State).
