The Vicksburg Missy Gators had already clinched a playoff berth. On Tuesday night, they put a nice, shiny bow around the division championship that goes with it.

Mikayla Banks scored three goals and Kirsten Silverthorne had two as the Missy Gators routed Callaway 8-0 to clinch the Division 4-5A title.

Vicksburg (7-1, 3-0 Division 4-5A) won the division for the second consecutive season and will host a first-round playoff game on Jan. 27.

Vicksburg’s likely opponent is Center Hill, which is currently in second place in Division 1-5A.

For the second straight game, the Missy Gators used a balanced attack to win. In addition to Banks and Silverthorne, Haleigh Erwin, Kaitlin Leverette and Leiana Thornell each had a goal.

Banks, Leverette and Erwin also had one assist apiece. So did Elizabeth Resseguet, Dalexus Smith, Tyra Prentiss and Baylee Etheridge.

Vicksburg High picked a perfect time to finally end its long scoreless drought.

Greg Hayden scored twice, including the game-winner four minutes into overtime, as the Gators beat Callaway.

The victory kept Vicksburg (5-10, 1-2 Division 4-5A) alive in its quest for a playoff berth. It’ll need to beat Callaway again on Jan. 20 at Memorial Stadium to clinch second place in the division.

For now, the Gators are able to celebrate a win and the end of a scoreless streak that lasted nearly two months. Jarrod Squire’s goal late in the first half was the team’s first since Nov. 21 against Brookhaven — a span of six games.

After Callaway took a 2-1 lead, VHS’ De’Arimus Smith was fouled in the box in the 75th minute. Hayden scored on the ensuing penalty kick to tie it up.

In overtime, Hayden’s shot glanced off the crossbar and came down in the net for the go-ahead score.
