Veritas thumps Porters Chapel

Porters Chapel Academy took jumpers. It took layups. It took weird-looking shots it had no business attempting.
All of them clanged off the rim or backboard, or missed entirely.
The Eagles missed their first 19 shots Thursday night as they fell behind by as many as 41 points, and wound up losing 63-28 to Veritas.
“Every team is entitled to a really bad game, and this was definitely that for us,” PCA coach Wayne Lynch said. “We missed a lot of layups, a lot of shots, but the bigger thing was we didn’t move the ball on offense like we should have. We weren’t setting enough screens off the ball and we were just sagging it on offense.”
Javonte Frye led PCA (4-10, 2-3 District 5-A) with nine points, and Josh Daffron scored six.
PCA’s first field goal didn’t come until Patrick Minor put in a layup with 4:19 left in the second quarter. The game was well out of hand by that point. Veritas opened up a 28-5 lead by the end of the first quarter, and led 57-16 at the end of the third.
Even if PCA had shot a little better, though, it would’ve had a tough time contending with Veritas’ Michael Barker. The 6-foot-7 center finished with 23 points, 14 rebounds and six blocked shots as he dominated the paint.
On several occasions, Barker simply reached up without jumping to snag a rebound from a shorter PCA player. In the third quarter, Barker violently swatted a shot by Frye, sending it rocketing out of bounds.
“It’s tough when you’re playing a 6-7 kid that’s just that long. We got dominated on the boards, obviously, and that’ll hurt you,” Lynch said. “We only got one opportunity on offense most times and then they got the rebound and came the other way.”

Deja Bradford scored 21 points, Melissa Creese added 18, and Veritas (19-3, 5-0 District 5-A) routed Porters Chapel (0-12, 0-4). Veritas led 41-2 at the end of the first quarter.
Sarah Krapac and Raylee Barwick scored two points apiece for PCA.
