A Tallulah, La., man was killed and another arrested in a shooting outside a Vicksburg nightclub early Sunday, just minutes after police had arrived to break up a fight.
Jimmy Johnson, 32, of Tallulah, died at about 3 a.m. Sunday at River Region Medical Center after being shot multiple times outside LD’s on Mulberry Street, Vicksburg police Chief Walter Armstrong said.
Kentrell Williams, 22, also of Tallulah, was arrested on scene and charged with murder, Armstrong said.
“They were at LD’s. The shooting occurred outside of LDs, right outside the door of the club side,” Armstrong said.
Police arrived at 1:55 a.m. to respond to the fight, Armstrong said. Williams left the fight to retrieve a gun from his vehicle, and shot Johnson at about 2:05 a.m.
“The officer on scene heard the shots and called for backup. Other officers quickly arrived on scene and made the arrest of Kentrell Willaims and recovered the murder weapon,” Armstrong said.
The club was still open and hosting a party when the shooting happened, Armstrong said. It was unclear how many people were outside the club when the shooting occurred, but police had received calls earlier in the night of cars overflowing from the club’s parking lot and blocking traffic, he said.
“We do not know the motive other than there was a physical and verbal altercation,” Armstrong said.
Williams was held without bail in the Issaquena County Correctional Facility awaiting his initial court appearance, which is set for Monday.
“We do not anticipate any additional arrests at this time, though it as an ongoing investigation,” Armstrong said.
The killing is the first reported in Vicksburg for 2015. Just one killing was reported in Vicksburg and Warren County during 2014.
Emanuel Erves, 70, died Feb. 23, 2014, when police say he was shoved down the stairs of a boarding house on Walnut Street by Caleb Erves.
It is unclear if the two men were related.
Caleb Erves had been set to go to trial in December, but the judicial proceedings were delayed after his attorney backed out of the case. The killing is similar to most that have occurred since Armstrong took over.
