Tuesday, also known as Shrove Tuesday and Fat Tuesday, will mark the last day before the Lenten season begins.
This day of celebration, known as Pancake Day in some other countries is the day before Ash Wednesday when many Christians will begin a time of self-examination, repentance and fasting.
Christ Episcopal Church has scheduled their annual 121st Shrove Tuesday pancake dinner from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Parish Hall of the church, 1115 Main St. Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for children and will include pancakes, sausage, coffee and orange juice and entertainment by Virginia Monsour and the Dirty Rice Burners.
Baked goods and frozen soups by the quart will also be available for purchase, said Betsy Harbaugh, a church member.
“The soups were a big hit last year,” she said.
“All proceeds go to charities which have included Jacob’s Ladder Learning Center, Warren County Children’s Shelter, the local Special Olympics, Haven House Family Shelter, Habitat for Humanity, Good Shepherd Community Center, Community Food Pantry, Children at Risk Fund, the Honduras Medical Mission, and Camp Bratton Green scholarship fund,” said Harbaugh.
“Last year we gave over $3,300 to various charities,” she said.
Also for sale will be a church cookbook.
“We decided we wanted to do a cookbook as a fundraiser,” Nancy Curtis said.
Curtis is one of the four cookbook committee members that also included Jackie Loyocano, Inez Ehrgott and Pat Engler.
“Some of the soups and desserts that will be for sale at the pancake supper are included in the cookbook,” she said.
This is the second cookbook the church has offered and even though some of the old recipes from the first edition are included, most of the recipes are new, Curtis said.
The cookbook includes recipes for appetizers and beverages, soups and salads, vegetable and side dishes, main dishes, bread and rolls, desserts, cookies, candy and this and that and each section is divided by pictures of the church’s stained glass windows.
Christ Episcopal Church is home to two Tiffany stained glass windows and a stained glass window that predates the Civil War.
The cost of the cookbook is $20.
