In the bottom of the first inning Saturday against Miami (Ohio), Mississippi State’s Wes Rea stepped up to the plate and belted a massive grand slam.

It set the tone for the rest of the day nicely.

Rea’s home run was one of three the Bulldogs hit in a 7-1 win over Miami. They kept the hitting going in game two of a split doubleheader, collecting 13 hits in a 19-5 rout of Cincinnati.

In all, the Bulldogs had 21 hits in the two games. Reid Humphreys homered against Miami and drove in three runs against Cincinnati, while Rea finished with six RBIs on the day.

Jacob Robson had three hits and scored three runs against Cincinnati.

Rea’s first-inning slam got the Bulldogs going, and an inning later Jake Vickerson hit a solo shot to put them up 5-0. Humphreys hit a solo home run in the seventh inning.

In game two, Cincinnati jumped out to a 4-0 lead after an inning and a half, but the Bulldogs scored four times in the bottom of the second to tie it and then kept going.

Two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and three more in the fifth gave Mississippi State (3-0) some breathing room, and it blew things wide open by plating eight runs in the sixth.

Southern Miss 10, Murray State 3

Southern Miss broke open a tie game with a six-run seventh inning, and Connor Barron led the Golden Eagles with four hits as they beat Murray State.

Barron led off the bottom of the first inning with a solo home run, singled in the third and eighth, and doubled in the seventh. He finished the game 4-for-5 with an RBI and four runs scored.

Dylan Burdeaux and Matt Durst also had three hits apiece for USM.

The first four hitters in Southern Miss’ order had 11 hits, four RBIs, and scored seven of the team’s 10 runs.
