Mississippi State, Southern Miss finish off sweeps

STARKVILLE — Seth Heck went 3-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored, John Holland was 3-for-5 with four RBIs, and Mississippi State finished off a superb opening weekend by beating Cincinnati 16-7 on Sunday.

The Bulldogs swept four games from Cincinnati and Miami (Ohio)by outscoring them 48-15.

Mississippi State scored twice in the bottom of the first inning Sunday, then blew it open by scoring eight times in the third and four more in the fourth.

Matthew Britton, Josh Lovelady and Jake Vickerson all drove in two runs apiece for Mississippi State.

Southern Miss 6, Murray State 5

James McMahon threw 5 1/3 strong innings in his first career start and Southern Miss held off a late Murray State charge to complete a three-game sweep.

McMahon, who had appeared in 37 games as a reliever, put together a solid first start. He allowed just two runs on five hits, walked four and struck out four in the longest outing of his career.

Dylan Burdeaux led Southern Miss’ offense by going 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Tim Lynch and Chase Scott were both 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Murray State scored three times in the top of the eighth inning to pull within a run. USM reliever Luke Lowery got out of the jam with two ground ball outs, and Ryan Milton threw a scoreless ninth inning for his second save of the season.
