Bulldogs edge Alabama A&M to stay perfect

For once, Mississippi State’s offense hit a speed bump. It didn’t keep the Bulldogs from racking up another victory.

Ryan Gridley’s RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning Sunday lifted Mississippi State to a 2-1 victory over Alabama A&M.

The two runs were a season low for the Bulldogs — it was the first time they’d scored less than seven — but they still improved to 8-0 for the second time in three years.

Earlier Sunday, MSU beat Marshall 7-4 in the completion of a game suspended by rain on Saturday night.

“This wasn’t a pretty day for us. Literally and figuratively,” Mississippi State coach John Cohen said. “We did not play our best baseball. I think the weather has a little bit to do with that, but you have to fight through that.”

The pitching trio of Vance Tatum, Ross Mitchell and Trevor Fitts combined to hold Alabama A&M to four hits and one second-inning run. They struck out 11 batters.

Tatum picked up the quality start, allowing two hits and one run, with nine strikeouts in six innings of work. Mitchell (2-0) gave way to Fitts after an error and a base hit put two A&M runners on in the ninth inning.

“They key for all of those guys was pitching inside. Being able to locate their fastball inside, especially to right-handed hitters,” Cohen said. “I thought they got on a roll doing that, and thank goodness they did because that enabled us to not have to use our bullpen as early as we needed to.”

Mississippi State led Marshall 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning Saturday when the rains came. The teams picked it up Sunday afternoon and the Bulldogs immediately tacked on two more runs.

Jake Vickerson and Matthew Britton both had RBI singles in the eighth inning to bring in a couple of insurance runs.

Brent Rooker hit a two-run homer for the Bulldogs before play was suspended. Vickerson was 2-for-2, and Gridley singled, walked twice and scored three runs.

Mississippi State had 11 hits and was further aided by a dozen walks issued by Marshall’s pitchers.

Lucas Laster allowed one run and struck out three in five innings — all before play was suspended on Saturday — to get the win.

Fitts worked the last 1 1/3 innings for his second save of the season. He came back to get the last two outs against Alabama A&M for his third save.
