Wintry weather mix expected

Vicksburg may see freezing rain starting Monday afternoon and into Tuesday.
There is a 70 percent chance of freezing rain across Warren County starting at 3 p.m., when the mercury dips below freezing, according to the National Weather Service.
The 70 percent chance of will linger through the night. Earlier forecasts called for freezing rain beginning at 6 p.m.
“We’re watching to see what happens midmorning and this afternoon. The weather service says that we’re going to be right around the freezing mark so it’s possible that this afternoon and evening we’re going to see some freezing rain,” Warren County Emergency Manager John Elfer said.
New ice accumulation of up to a tenth of an inch is possible.
No ice was reported overnight, Sheriff Martin Pace said.
“We didn’t have any problems throughout the night. We had a tree down on Whatley Road that was into some power lines, but we didn’t have any icing and no significant blockages or damage due to the rain and wind,” Pace said.
Vicksburg Warren School District Superintendent Chad Shealy said schools open as planned Monday.
“We might look at Monday afternoon’s activities and possibly delay some of those,” he said.
Vicksburg Police Department Chief Walter Armstrong said he encourages motorists who are going to be out to make sure they have a full tank of gas.
“So many times accidents happen, and traffic will back up,” he said. “If you don’t have a lot of fuel you could run out of gas just sitting there idling.”
Wintry weather is expected to continue overnight as the low dips to 28, bringing a 50 percent chance of freezing rain into Tuesday morning. The majority of freezing rain is expected to fall Tuesday before 8 a.m.
North Mississippi is expected to see much more ice and snow accumulation, Mississippi Emergency Management officials said.
“We are hoping to avoid power outages with this system, but it is imperative people think about what they will do if their electricity goes out and you can’t travel because roads are iced over,” MEMA director Robert Latham said. “Winter weather is the hardest thing to forecast in this state and a degree one way or the other can change things dramatically. Please don’t panic, just be prepared.”
Warren County is expected get a break from the frozen stuff Tuesday night as the low hovers above freezing but Wednesday could brining another round of winter weather.
A mix of rain and snow is expected after 7 p.m. Wednesday, according to the weather service.
By Thursday, the area should thaw out as the weather service is calling for party sunny conditions with a high around 46. No precipitation is expected Thursday night as the low is predicted to fall to 26. A slight chance of rain is being forecasted for weekend, ending Sunday with a high of around 70.
