Rebels’ Moody nabs SEC honor

Some people collect little stickers for their suitcase or souvenirs as they travel the world.
Stefan Moody is collecting tons of accolades.
Ole Miss’ junior guard got the latest one for his trophy case on Monday when he was named the Southeastern Conference’s Player of the Week.
Moody got the honor after scoring 29 points in a 71-65 win over Mississippi State. He hit eight 3-pointers, including three in a span of 82 seconds as the Rebels erased a 10-point deficit in the second half.
On Saturday, he hit six 3-pointers and finished with 22 points and six steals as Ole Miss beat Tennessee 59-57.
It’s the second time this month that Moody has gotten the award, and he’s been a big part of the Rebels’ surge toward an NCAA Tournament berth.
Moody’s 16.4 points per game average ranks fourth in the SEC. He’s also third in the conference in steals per game and second with 64 made 3-pointers.
Not bad for a guy who is on his third school. Moody was an All-Sun Belt Conference player as a freshman at Florida Atlantic, then transferred to Kilgore Junior College in Texas and earned honorable mention All-America honors.
Now, it seems, he’s well on his way to adding an All-SEC selection to his resumé.
“He’s playing with a lot of confidence,” Ole Miss coach Andy Kennedy said in a press conference following Saturday’s win over Tennessee. “He’s making hard shots for us.”
Ole Miss has won eight of its last nine SEC games and has a 19-8 overall record heading into Wednesday’s home game against Georgia.
The Rebels’ hot stretch started after a five-point loss at Georgia on Jan. 20. Since then, they’ve won six games decided by seven points or less and lost one to Arkansas on a shot in the final seconds.
Moody said in an interview with The Oxford Eagle that the Rebels have simply gotten better at finding a way to win close games.
“I feel like we’re a different team as far as the way we handle things. How we just go at it going down the stretch,” Moody said. “We’re a much better closing team. We’ve probably been in a few close ones, lost one to Arkansas and won all the rest.”
