Bulldogs stay red hot by hammering Alcorn

The weather across Mississippi this week has been frigid. Ryan Gridley and the Mississippi State Bulldogs, however, have been as hot as the sun.

Gridley went 4-for-5 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored as the Bulldogs beat Alcorn State 10-2 on Tuesday afternoon for their ninth consecutive victory.

Gridley is hitting .591 this season and on Monday became the first Mississippi State player since 2012 to be named Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week. Monday was his fourth multiple-hit game of the season.

The Bulldogs (9-0) had 14 hits and scored at least 10 runs for the fourth time this season. They reached that total five times all of last season.

Jacob Robson and Seth Heck had two hits apiece, and Jake Vickerson went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored.

The Bulldogs bunted four times in a three-run, four-hit second inning. An RBI double by pinch hitter Luke Reynolds and a two-run single by Vickerson were the big blows during a three-run sixth inning that put MSU ahead 7-2, then Gridley followed with a two-run double in the seventh to put an exclamation point on things.

In all, the Bulldogs were credited with five sacrifices — four on bunts — and stole six bases.

Freshman right-hander Jesse McCord pitched 5 2/3 innings to earn the first victory of his college career.

McCord allowed two runs on three hits, walked four and struck out six.

McCord gave up a leadoff home run to Dervincent Hamilton in the third inning, and was charged with another run in the sixth when Ashton Lewis delivered an RBI single off reliever Zac Houston one batter after McCord left the game.

“I got into a rhythm in a couple of innings, but I’ve still got to get better,” McCord said. “I missed a lot. I’ve still got a lot of improvement. But I did all right, I guess.”

Jonathan Morales allowed four runs, one earned, and nine hits in 4 1/3 innings and took the loss for Alcorn (3-5).

Houston pitched 1 1/3 innings for MSU and wasn’t charged with a run. Dakota Hudson and Logan Elliott finished up with one scoreless inning apiece.

Mississippi State’s bullpen combined for six strikeouts.
