Rebels finish homestand with a win

Ole Miss said goodbye to Swayze Field for a while, but it was a fond farewell.

Pitchers Evan Anderson, Jacob Waguespack and Will Stokes combined to allow one run and just four hits, Sikes Orvis homered and Austin Knight singled in the go-ahead run as the Rebels beat Arkansas State 2-1 on Tuesday afternoon.

It was the final game of a season-opening seven-game homestand for Ole Miss (5-2), which will go on the road to face Central Florida in a three-game series beginning Friday.

A midweek game at Southern Miss follows next Tuesday, and nine of Ole Miss’ next 12 games are away from Oxford.

Today’s home game against Central Arkansas was postponed because of impending bad weather.

Anderson gave up two walks and hit a batter in the first inning, but got out of the jam having only surrendered one run. He wound up pitching five innings, didn’t allow another walk and only gave up one hit.

“This might be a big moment for him because a lot of guys would have asked to come out of the game. But bases loaded, he gets out of it and nearly throws a no-hitter for the rest of the game,” Ole Miss coach Mike Bianco said.

Waguespack allowed just two hits in three innings of shutout relief, and freshman Will Stokes pitched a scoreless ninth for his first career save.

“We needed to get (Stokes) ready,” Bianco said. “He needs to be a guy that we are going to count on in the bullpen.”

After Arkansas State (4-3) took its early lead, Orvis belted a solo home run into the right field bullpen to tie the game in the bottom of the first.

In the fourth inning, Orvis singled and scored the go-ahead run on Knight’s two-out single to give the Rebels a 2-1 lead that they held until the end.

Chandler Hawkins (1-2) allowed both of Ole Miss’ runs and took the loss, despite allowing only four hits and two walks in five innings. He struck out six. Arkansas State relievers Bo Ritter and Coulton Lee combined to allow one hit in three shutout innings.
