Mississippi State nips Arizona to improve to 10-0

On Friday night, Mississippi State became a perfect 10.
Preston Brown allowed one run in six sharp innings, Jake Vickerson went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored, and the Bulldogs beat Arizona to improve their record to 10-0.
Mississippi State became the first team in the country to reach 10 wins this season, and it’s the fifth time in school history that it has gotten to 10-0.
The school record for consecutive victories at the start of the season is 18, set in 2006. The other times MSU has started 10-0 were in 1985, 1995, 2006 and 2013.
The Bulldogs took the lead for good by scoring two runs in the top of the third inning. Both runs scored on bases-loaded walks to Josh Lovelady and Vickerson.
John Holland extended Mississippi State’s lead with a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning, and Vickerson’s RBI single in the seventh made it 4-1.
MSU and Arizona play again today at 11 a.m. at Dudy Noble Field. The Bulldogs will then play Samford at 3 p.m.
UCF 5, Ole Miss 4
JoMarcos Woods’ RBI single with two outs in the ninth inning gave Central Florida (9-0) a walk-off win over Ole Miss (5-3).
UCF scored twice in the sixth inning, twice more in the eighth and once in the ninth to come back from a 4-0 deficit.
James Vasquez started the winning rally for UCF with a one-out double, and pinch runner Kam Gellinger scored from second on Woods’ single to left.
Dylan Moore went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored for UCF, while Woods and Vasquez each had two hits.
J.B. Woodman was 2-for-3 with a triple, RBI and run scored for Ole Miss.
Troy 6, Southern Miss 2
Logan Hill went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored, Nick Masonia singled twice and scored two runs, and Troy (7-2) beat Southern Miss (3-4-1) in the opener of a weekend series in Alabama.
Connor Barron and Tim Lynch hit solo home runs for Southern Miss, which left 11 runners on base. Ryan Ellis was 3-for-5.
Hill’s two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning staked Troy to an early lead, and Trevin Hall made it 3-0 by reaching on an infield hit and scoring on a ground out.
Hall went 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.
Corey Childress held Southern Miss to two runs in six innings to get the win. He allowed six hits and two walks, and struck out four.
Christian Talley (1-2) lasted 4 1/3 innings for Southern Miss, gave up six runs on nine hits, and took the loss.
