Warren Central shook off an early deficit Tuesday night, but wasn’t able to overcome a string of mistakes that led to its first loss of the season.

The Vikings committed three errors, struck out four times, and lost 10-3 to Brandon at Viking Field.

“It’s a game of baseball. You’re going to have bad nights and we just had a really bad night,” Warren Central coach Conner Douglas said. “We’ve got to bounce back. We’ve got to overcome it and we’ve got to move on to the next game.”

Brandon jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning before left fielder Taft Nesmith cut the deficit to one with a two-run double down the line in the bottom of the inning. But after Nesmith’s extra base hit made it 3-2, the Vikings were unable to generate any more offense until the game was out of reach in the seventh.

The Bulldogs followed their three-run first inning with a four-run second, punctuated by a two-run double of their own. But the onslaught was sparked by a controversial call at the plate that Douglas argued.

With the bases loaded and one out, Brandon hit a ground ball to third base that Conner Wilkinson scooped up and threw home for the force out.

The home plate umpire ruled the throw pulled catcher Tyler McRight off the plate, allowing the run to score and pushing Brandon’s lead to 4-2. After that, the Bulldogs scored three more times to take a commanding 8-2 lead into the third inning.

“Every game you’re going to have a call that doesn’t go your way. That’s baseball,” Douglas said. “The umpires aren’t going to be perfect, but then again we’ve got to overcome it and make the next play. We didn’t.”

Brooks Boolos (0-1) took the loss for the Vikings, pitching 4 1/3 innings and striking out two in his first start of the season.

“I was very proud of our pitchers. They did what we asked them to do. They threw strikes and they didn’t walk people. That’s all we ask them to do,” Douglas said. “They kept us in the ballgame if we make plays and we just didn’t make plays.”

Warren Central tacked on a run in the bottom of the seventh on Zach Cox’s RBI single, but it wasn’t enough to even dent the deficit.

The Vikings next go on the road to take on Alabama’s UMS Wright Thursday afternoon in the Mid-Mississippi Classic at Pearl High School. WC will play another team from Mobile, McGill-Toolen, Friday at Jackson Academy.
