Run Through History set for Saturday

With the loud pop of a fired cannon, one of Vicksburg’s most storied traditions will begin for the 36th annual time Saturday.
Run Thru History, the 5-kilometer walk and 10-kilometer run through the historic Vicksburg National Military Park, has become a staple of the city, one that usually ushers in the spring season and combines Vicksburg’s rich history with an event its active citizens enjoy.
More than 550 people have pre-registered for the race, walk or 1-mile children’s fun run that will wind through the park. That number is expected to double as more people continue registration until race day arrives.
“You get to run by the monuments in the park and see the historical value,” Run Thru History committee member Mike McMillin said. “We’re expecting 1,000 people.”
The committee is also expecting the weather to cooperate. Despite chilly conditions that could bring sleet predicted to hit Warren County Wednesday and Thursday, Saturday’s current forecast calls for sunny skies and a high of 54 degrees.
“We’re not worried at all,” McMillin said. “It should be great running weather.”
Those who have pre-registered can pick up their race packets Friday at Battlefield Inn from 5 to 8 p.m. Race-goers are encouraged to pick up their packets early to help ease the last-minute onslaught of those signing up late.
McMillin, who has been a part of the race committee for five years, hopes Vicksburg and the surrounding community will come out in full force Saturday to be a part of one of the city’s most anticipated yearly events.
“After the race, we have a post-race event with The Chill playing during the awards ceremony,” he said. “Come support the YMCA, the Vicksburg Military Park. Come be a part of the community.”
The entry fee for the race is $30 for the run and walk. Online registration is available at runthruhistory.org. Late registration and packet pick-up for pre-registered runners and walkers will be open from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, and 7 to 8 a.m. Saturday at Battlefield Inn.
