Juvenile escapee still at-large

A 14-year-old who escaped the Warren County Juvenile Detention Center remained on the lam Thursday morning.

The boy escaped Tuesday, leading up to a wreck that injured two Vicksburg police investigators and a woman at Adams and Clay Street.

“Because of security, I’m not at liberty to say exactly, but he was not on his way to court,” said Kathy Holden, administrator of the detention center.

Holden said the teen saw an “unfortunate opportunity and he used it” to escape from custody.

Other juvenile detainees remained calm and did not try to escape when the teen ran, she said.

“I’m just grateful that no other kid participated when he decided to do what he did,” Holden said.

The teen was arrested earlier this month and charged with auto theft, Vicksburg police Capt. Sandra Williams said.

He is accused of stealing a car from the Exxon at Mission 66 and Clay Street. The 2002 Chevrolet Malibu was later recovered at Imperial Apartments on Mission 66, Williams said.

A court date is pending for the teen on the auto theft charge, Holden said.

Searching for an escaped juvenile detainee is complicated by the fact that a name and description cannot be released to the public, Holden said. Privacy laws governing youth court proceedings prevent public disclosure of information about detainees.

“The only description that we were allowed to put it over the radio is that he ran out and had a blue juvenile detention center jumpsuit on,” Holden said.

A privately broadcast transmission gave out law enforcement sensitive information about the teen, Holden said.

“All law enforcement are actively looking for him,” she said. “They know who they’re looking forward.”

The teen is not considered to be dangerous, Holden said.

Vicksburg police Lt. Troy Kimble, investigator Bobby Jones and Rose McKenzie, the wife of longtime sheriff’s deputy Jay McKenzie, were injured in a crash as the two policemen were responding to the escape call at the detention center.

All three were treated and released from River Region Medical Center.
