Despite steady rain throughout Friday, Vicksburg and Warren County escaped major flooding issues on roadways and from the Big Black River.
The Big Black River was 31.67 feet Friday. Flood stage is 28 feet. Despite minor flooding, water had not covered nearby roads, Sheriff Martin pace said.
“The Big Black is into the fields off Highway 80 near the county line,” Pace said. “It is within inches of going over Warriors’ Trail. It’s probably six or eight inches below the road surface.”
The Big Black is expected to remain flooded through March 18, the last day of the most recent forecast from the National Weather Services’ Advanced Hydrological Prediction Service.
Flooding was not expected in the Mississippi River. It stood at 33.16 feet Friday, according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Flood stage is 43 feet.
A storm front dumped rain sporadically across the area. Heavy rain would fall for a few minutes in one area of the city before moving to another. Minor flooding was reported on North Frontage Road and at other low-lying spots in the city, but dissipated quickly when precipitation stopped by evening.
The variability of the rain in the area was evident in reports from two local gages. Vicksburg Tallulah Regional Airport reported .49 inches of rain between midnight and 6 p.m., while Vicksburg Water Treatment plant on Haining Road reported .15 inches.
No additional rain was expected overnight.
“We will be out of rain by 8 p.m.,” Warren County Emergency Manager John Elfer said Friday afternoon.
After a morning of patchy fog, skies are expected to remain cloudy through Saturday evening. The national weather service is calling for a high of 71 with an overnight low of 52.
Partly cloudy skies will remain until at least Tuesday when the weather service is calling for a 20 percent chance of rain.
Showers and highs in the lower 70s are expected through the rest of next week.
