Schoonover leads St. Al by Riverside

Persistent rains and an extended basketball season have conspired to keep St. Aloysius’ entire roster off the field for nearly everything except the five games they’ve played.

Despite that issue, they’re doing all right.

Seventh-grader Stephanie Schoonover threw a one-hit shutout, and the Lady Flashes used a big first inning to propel themselves to a 5-0 win over Riverside Monday evening at Bazinsky Park.

St. Al improved its record to 3-2 heading into Thursday’s Division 7-1A opener at Cathedral. Assistant coach Howard Park said he was thrilled with the team’s performance considering the obstacles it’s faced in the first few weeks of the season.

“We’re tickled to death about that,” Park said. “Now district will be the big thing. The main thing will be getting into the playoffs. We’ve got the team to do it.”

Schoonover allowed one hit — a bunt single in the second inning — walked two and struck out nine as she threw her second shutout in three games. She also blanked Vicksburg in a four-inning game at Warren Central’s Lady Vikes Invitational on March 7.

Schoonover also had an RBI single on Monday.

“She was throwing her change-up and curveball good. She located the ball very well,” Park said.

St. Al struck for three runs in the bottom of the first inning and never relinquished the lead. Grace Upshaw and Brooklyn Richards each singled in a run, and another scored on a double steal.

Jordan McDonald had an RBI ground out in the second inning and Schoonover an RBI single in the fifth to pad the lead.

Richards finished the game 2-for-3 with an RBI, and McDonald was 1-for-2 with a single, walk, RBI and two runs scored.
