Warren Central returned from a week off refreshed, rejuvenated and, apparently, more than ready for its division schedule.
The Vikings hit six doubles — two each by Conner Wilkinson, Marcus Ragan and Layne Tedder — and throttled Murrah 12-1 on Tuesday in their Division 4-6A opener.
Ragan, Wilkinson and Tedder each had two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored. Josh Lieberman went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored, and Tyler McRight had two hits.
In all, WC racked up 13 hits while playing its first game in eight days. Despite the layoff, WC scored at least five runs for the sixth time in seven games.
“I’m proud of the guys to show up and keep in stride,” Warren Central coach Conner Douglas said. “We didn’t skip a beat, made great adjustments at the plate and are playing with confidence.”
The Vikings (4-3, 1-0 Division 4-6A) had three consecutive doubles in the top of the second inning, by Tedder, Ragan and Wilkinson, and plated four runs to take an early lead.
Lieberman and Tedder started the fourth inning with back-to-back doubles, and WC went on to score six in that frame to put it out of reach.
WC added two more runs in the fifth and the game was halted by the 10-run mercy rule.
Warren Central pitcher Taft Nesmith allowed one run in four innings to get the win. He gave up three hits, walked four and struck out eight.
Reliever Booth Buys finished up with one scoreless inning.
Warren Central and Murrah will play again on Friday night at Viking Field. WC will then host Vicksburg High and Germantown in a split doubleheader on Saturday.
Porters Chapel 10, Jackson Victors 0
Zac Morgan threw five shutout innings to lead Porters Chapel Academy (1-4) past the home school Jackson Victors for its first win of the season.
Garrett Hutchins doubled and scored three runs for PCA, while Hunter Lyons had two hits. Taylor Rushing reached base four times and scored twice.
