Herbert Carl Stokes Sr.

Herbert Carl Stokes Sr. died Tuesday, March 24, 2015, at his residence in Vicksburg. He was 82.
Born and raised in Holly Bluff, he had been making his home in Vicksburg since 1953. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and served on the USS Kearsarge.
He retired from the Illinois Central Railroad/Kansas City Southern Railroad after 39 years of service. He served 12 years as a Warren County constable, was an avid hunter and fisherman, and was a member of Northside Baptist Church.
Herbert was preceded in death by his parents, Howell H. and Nellie Rea Briggs Stokes; his sisters, Mildred Lewis, Lucy Conger and Thelma Majors; and brothers, Harry Stokes and Gene Stokes.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Barrett Stokes of Vicksburg; his daughter, Ellen (Tom) Nolan of Roanoke, Va.; his son, Herbert Carl Stokes Jr. of Lake Village, Ark.; his sisters, Mary (Bobby) Williams of Clarksville, Tenn., Sylvia (Don) McGraw of Benton and Maxine (James) Clements of Jackson; three grandchildren, Denton Carl Stokes, Andrew Philip Nolan and Timothy Carl Nolen; two great-grandchildren, Mattie Stokes and Wiley Carl Stokes; and nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, March 26, 2015, in the chapel of Glenwood Funeral Home with the Rev. Frank Lescalette officiating, assisted by the Rev. Gene Jacks. Interment will follow at Greenlawn Gardens Cemetery.
Visitation will be from noon Thursday until the hour of the service.
Pallbearers will be Rex Gray, Mike Outz, Mike Barrett, James Pierce, Bobby Williams and Jason Scallion.
