Gators rout Callaway with late surge

Four innings of a tight, low-scoring game seemed to be all the Vicksburg Gators could handle.
The Gators scored six unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, added three more in the sixth, and turned a close pitchers’ duel against Callaway into a run-rule rout, 10-0 Tuesday night at Bazinsky Field.
It was the Gators’ fourth consecutive victory. They’ve scored at least nine runs in all of them, and a total of 54 during the winning streak.
“We just continue to work. That’s all I know how to do as a coach, is work and fix things,” Vicksburg coach Derrick DeWald said. “We still have a lot of negatives. The other day against St. Al (a 16-8 win) we had 14 positives and 15 negatives. If we fix those things, we have a chance to compete.”
The winning streak has propelled the Gators (4-5, 3-1 Division 4-5A) right back into the division title race. They have two games next week against first-place Pearl, and can virtually lock up a No. 2 seed in the Class 5A playoffs by beating Callaway again Thursday night in Jackson.
“We’ve got to win Thursday over there. Our goals are still there, to win district,” DeWald said. “We have to regroup because there’s still some things we’ve got to fix.”
Vicksburg’s Will Martin pitched a career-long six innings Monday. He allowed no runs and one hit, walked three and struck out five. His bid for a no-hitter was broken up by Albert Hughes’ double in the top of the fifth inning.
Martin’s effort kept the Gators close enough to finally pull away once they got to Callaway starter Jordan Bowden.
Bowden gave up a run in the first inning when leadoff hitter Marcus Williams doubled and scored, then kept the Gators in check until his defense betrayed him in the fifth.
Callaway (2-3, 1-2 Division 4-5A) committed six errors in the inning, leading to six runs that took Vicksburg’s lead from a single run to a comfortable 7-0.
Tyler Smith helped the rally along with a two-run double, and Chandler Luke had a two-run single. Luke finished the game 2-for-4 with three RBIs.
The Gators added three more runs in the sixth — two of them coming in on wild pitches — to finish the suddenly one-sided game by the mercy rule.
“Once we got that hit to get the first two runs, you could see our energy level rise,” DeWald said.
Warren Central 6, Greenville 5
Marcus Ragan drove in a pair of runs with a triple in the bottom of the sixth inning, and Warren Central (8-5, 4-1 Division 4-6A) beat a stubborn Greenville (2-3, 2-2) squad.
Ragan was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored for WC, and Colton Norris drove in two runs. Layne Tedder allowed one run, walked two batters and struck out eight in four innings to get the win.
Jaylyn Williams went 2-for-3 with three RBIs for Greenville. He hit a two-run home run in the top of the seventh that pulled the Hornets within a run, but WC closer Brooks Boolos got the final out for a save.
Warren Central and Greenville will play again Thursday night in Greenville.
