As Mississippi’s track and field schedule hurtles toward the postseason, St. Aloysius’ boys and girls teams both have the look of championship contenders.
Alyssa Engel set a personal record with a leap of 18 feet, 1 inch to win the girls’ long jump, and St. Al won the Division II team title at the Mississippi College Blue Cross Blue Shield Invitational on Saturday.
In the Division II boys meet, DeMichael Harris finished first in the 100, 200 and 400 meters to lead St. Al to another team title.
The Flashes had 11 top-three performances.
The 4×400 meter relay team won, as did Josh Price in the shot put. Second-place finishers included Price in the discus, Tae Warnsley in the 110 and 300 meter hurdles, the 4×800 meter relay team, and Luke Eckstein in the 3,200 meter run.
Eckstein finished third in the 1,600 meters, just ahead of teammate Chandler Roesch.
On the girls’ side, Engel turned in a second-place effort in the triple jump to go with her win in the long jump. Madalyn Burke was second in the 3,200 meters, teammate Mary Bradley Warnock was third, and the 4×800 and 4×400 meter relay teams both finished second.
Division II was for Classes 1A, 2A and 3A. Division I comprised Classes 4A-6A, and both Vicksburg High and Warren Central turned in a slew of strong performances.
Vicksburg’s Leon Miles won in the boys’ 300 meter hurdles and was second in the 110 hurdles. Tyler McDowell won the triple jump with a leap of 42 feet, 7 inches, and the 4×400 relay team was also victorious.
Quincy Brown finished second in the boys’ high jump.
Warren Central’s boys got wins in the 4×200 and 4×100 relays, and second-place efforts by Joe’Vontae Shorter in the 200 meters and long jump.
Shorter joined Lawrence Lewis, Nick Caldwell and DeEdrick Wilson on both winning relay teams.
In the Division I girls meet, Warren Central got a second-place finish from BreAsya Davis in the 100 meters — she posted a time of 12.67 seconds — and a third from Kelsea Kline in the long jump.
For the Vicksburg Missy Gators, Tymesha Nabors won the 300 hurdles with a time of 47.25 seconds — a second and a half better than runner-up Asia Poe of Madison Central — and the 4×100 meter relay team also won.
The Missy Gators’ 4×200 and 4×400 meter relay teams finished second.
Vicksburg will host a field events-only meet Tuesday at 4 p.m.
