Pearl too much for Missy Gators

The Vicksburg Missy Gators needed not only to win, but to make up a 10-run deficit Tuesday against Pearl to win their second straight division championship.

They didn’t accomplish either difficult task.

Katylnn Harvey went 2-for-3 with a double, triple, two RBIs and two runs scored as Pearl jumped out to an early lead and beat the Missy Gators 6-1.

It was a better showing than Vicksburg had in a 16-6 loss at Pearl 10 days ago, but still not enough to put it atop the division standings.

Pearl (7-8, 2-0 Division 4-5A) clinched the title in the two-team division and a first-round playoff bye. Vicksburg (7-10, 0-2) will play Clarksdale or Center Hill in a first-round series April 23 and 24.

Harvey jumpstarted Pearl’s attack with a double in the top of the first inning, Two more hits followed to stake the Lady Pirates to a 2-0 lead, and they added three in the second inning. Harvey tripled in two runs and scored on a passed ball to make it 5-0.

The Missy Gators didn’t score until Brianna Knox singled and eventually came home on a base hit by Olivia Oakes with two outs in the bottom of the seventh.
