Kyle Schwarber went 1-for-3 with a triple, RBI and two runs scored, Albert Almora scored two runs, and the Tennessee Smokies spoiled the 2015 home opener at Trustmark Park by beating the Mississippi Braves 7-2 on Thursday night.
Schwarber’s RBI triple was the key hit in a three-run eighth inning that put the game out of reach. Schwarber knocked in Almora, who had walked, then scored on a wild pitch. Stephen Bruno followed with another triple and scored on another wild pitch to give the Smokies a 7-1 lead.
Corey Black allowed one run in five innings to get the win for Tennessee. He walked three, struck out four, and gave up four hits.
Rio Ruiz went 2-for-4 with two doubles, an RBI and a run scored for the M-Braves.
M-Braves right-hander Jason Hursh suffered the loss. The former first-round pick lasted just three innings, allowing three runs on three hits. He walked four and struck out one.
